For a long time, I didn’t understand humility in the spiritual sense, even while actively walking a spiritual path. I knew it was something we were supposed to cultivate, but it was just… chronically confusing.
Humility felt like a kind of watered-down humiliation. Humanity’s shut-it-down mechanism when my ego is getting out of hand to keep some sort of balance. I knew that wasn’t quite right, but if I’m honest, it was the best definition I was working with at the time, so I went with it.
I asked people what spiritual humility meant to them. I heard thoughtful answers like…
All of those definitions are helpful. But eventually (after no small number of years of contemplation), I found a different frame. One that didn’t just make sense intellectually but actually helped me embody humility.
Let me walk you through this because you have to feel yourself through this explanation.
Life feels heavy. The daily grind feels relentless. Relationships, goals, and problems carry a lot of pressure.
But when I shift the orientation and remember that I am actually a spiritual being having a human experience… Everything Changes.

And this is where humility truly comes in.
Or how they see me.
I used to hear sayings like “What people think of you is none of your business,” and I had no mental shelf to place that idea on. It sounded nice, but unrealistic. Now I understand it differently. Of course, people will see reality through the lens of their own experiences, their previous wounds, and baseline vibration. That’s how it’s supposed to work.
The same is true for the phrase “You have to give your kids to God.” For a long time, that idea terrified me. How could I hand my children over to something that might mess everything up? These are my kids. My responsibility. My heart.
And yet…
My job is to love, guide, and show up — not to control outcomes.
Humility doesn’t require me to reject this mammalian, human form. I can love it. Care for it. Dress it beautifully. Feel confident and radiant inside it (so long as I’m not comparing myself to anyone else or trying to be better than anyone else). The expression of that radiance comes out as gratitude to my Creator.
As long as that beauty isn’t measured against others…
