Balancing Executive Control: A Guide to Better Focus

For years I used the phrase “executive function problems.”
I said it the same way people say things like “I have bad knees” or “I’m terrible with directions.” It sounded scientific enough to explain something diagnosable, but if I’m honest, I never really thought about what “executive functioning” actually means.

Eventually I learned that the phrase refers to something very specific: a set of mental abilities largely coordinated by a region of the brain called the Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, often abbreviated as the DLPFC (this acronym comes up a lot in this piece, remember it).

This small area of brain tissue, sitting just behind the forehead on the outer portion of the frontal lobes, quietly performs one of the most important jobs in the human brain. It does not generate our thoughts or emotions. It does not produce our creativity or imagination.

Instead, it manages them.

It is, in many ways, the brain’s executive.


What “Executive Function” Literally Means

The term executive function sounds abstract, but its meaning is surprisingly literal. Executive functions are the mental processes that allow us to coordinate behavior across time.

These include the abilities to:

  • hold information in mind (working memory)
  • plan and sequence actions
  • inhibit impulses
  • switch strategies when conditions change
  • maintain attention toward long-term goals

In practical terms, executive function is what allows someone to think:

“I should do this now so something better can happen later.”

It is the system that allows the brain to maintain a goal, organize behavior around it, and resist distractions that would derail it.

Without this system, thoughts and impulses would simply occur in the moment, with little ability to guide them toward future outcomes.

For some readers, that sentence may describe a neurological deficit.

For others, like me, it may describe an average Tuesday.


When the System Is Understimulated

When the DLPFC is underactive—or its networks are not functioning efficiently—people often experience what psychologists call executive dysfunction.

This doesn’t mean intelligence is impaired. Many individuals with executive dysfunction are highly intelligent and capable of complex reasoning. The difficulty lies not in understanding, but in organizing behavior.

Common experiences include:

  • difficulty finishing tasks
  • forgetting intentions
  • trouble organizing complex activities
  • impulsive decision-making
  • losing track of goals

One of the most studied conditions associated with this pattern is Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Brain imaging research has repeatedly shown differences in prefrontal cortex activity and connectivity in individuals with ADHD, particularly in networks involving the DLPFC that regulate attention and working memory.

Because these networks rely heavily on dopamine and norepinephrine signaling, many treatments aim to improve the efficiency of these chemical systems.

Medications such as Methylphenidate increase the availability of these neurotransmitters in the prefrontal cortex, often helping the DLPFC maintain stable activity during tasks that require sustained attention.

In other words, the medication does not “calm the brain down.”
It often strengthens the signal that allows the executive system to stay engaged.


When the System Is Overstimulated

Interestingly, problems can also occur in the opposite direction. If the brain’s executive control systems become too dominant, the result can be excessive monitoring, rumination, and mental rigidity.

Conditions commonly associated with heightened prefrontal control include:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • certain forms of Major depressive disorder involving rumination

In these situations, the brain’s control systems remain locked into continuous evaluation and prediction. Instead of guiding behavior smoothly, the executive system becomes trapped in loops of analysis:

Did I do that correctly?
What if something goes wrong?
Should I rethink that decision?

The result is a mind that struggles to disengage from its own monitoring processes.

Ironically, the same brain system that normally helps organize our thoughts can sometimes become the system that won’t let them rest.


When the System Is Balanced

When the DLPFC functions well, something remarkable happens: life feels manageable.

The brain can hold goals in mind without becoming rigid.
It can adapt strategies without losing direction.
It can maintain attention while still remaining flexible.

Balanced executive function allows people to:

  • sustain focus
  • regulate impulses
  • adjust plans when circumstances change
  • move steadily toward long-term goals

Most of the time, we never notice it.


The Paradox of the Executive Brain

Here is where things become interesting.

Research on elite athletes, musicians, and creative professionals has revealed that some of the most extraordinary human performances occur when parts of the prefrontal cortex temporarily reduce their activity.

Neuroscientists sometimes refer to this phenomenon as transient hypofrontality.

During these moments, often described as being “in the zone”, the constant monitoring and self-evaluation normally performed by the executive brain quiet down. Automatic skill systems take over, allowing performance to become fluid and effortless.

This reveals a fascinating paradox.

The brain system that allows us to plan, regulate, and control our behavior is also the system that sometimes needs to step aside for our best performances to emerge.

Too little executive control, and behavior becomes chaotic.

Too much executive control, and thought becomes trapped in loops of analysis.

Optimal functioning lies somewhere in between—a state where the executive brain guides our behavior without suffocating it.


A Quiet Form of Intelligence

Understanding the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex reframes the way we think about discipline, attention, and self-control.

What we often describe as “being organized,” “being scattered,” or “overthinking” may reflect subtle differences in how our brain’s executive networks operate.

These networks do not determine our intelligence or our worth. They simply coordinate the flow of our thoughts and actions across time.

And recognizing that the voice is not the whole of you can feel like a quiet awakening.

It is simply the brain’s executive doing its job.

And sometimes, the best thing that executive can do…
is take a step back.

In the end, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is not the source of our identity. It is simply a system the brain uses to organize behavior across time—to plan, monitor, correct, and steer our actions toward future outcomes. Most of the time it works quietly in the background, keeping life on track without demanding attention. But when we begin to understand what this system is actually doing, something interesting happens. The constant voice in our head—the one planning, worrying, organizing, and correcting—loses a little of its authority. We realize it is not the entirety of who we are. It is simply the brain’s executive doing its job. And recognizing that can be strangely freeing: the thoughts may still arise, the plans and worries may still appear, but they no longer have to define us.
