Dating Dogma

Most people marry their ideas far too young.

They meet an explanation that makes the world feel orderly, say “This is the one,” and spend the rest of their lives defending the relationship.

But ideas are terrible spouses.

They’re much better first dates.

Take them out for coffee. Ask difficult questions. Introduce them to your smartest friends.

See how they behave when life gets messy.

Notice whether they make you kinder or crueler, more curious or more certain, more open or more defensive.

Some ideas deserve a second date.

Some become lifelong companions.

Most were simply passing through, arriving exactly when you needed them before making room for something truer.

Truth isn’t threatened by questions.

Maybe wisdom isn’t marrying the first idea that makes your heart race.

Maybe wisdom is learning to date widely, commit carefully, and never stop listening for the quiet possibility that reality is still larger than your best explanation.
